The novel offers a rare glimpse into the class and social issues of the time. Even though Nick is related to Daisy and went to college with Tom, he feels as though he barley knows them.
When he came back, things were much different and Daisy was a taken women. When she does, events unfold with all the tragic inevitability of a Greek drama, with detached, cynical neighbor Nick Carraway acting as chorus throughout. When, almost immediately, the telephone rang inside and the butler left the porch Daisy seized upon the momentary interruption and leaned toward me.
Among the broken fragments of the last five minutes at table I remember the candles being lit again, pointlessly, and I was conscious of wanting to look squarely at every one, and yet to avoid all eyes.
